Telinga kita mampu membezakan bunyi-bunyi yang didengar kerana bunyi mempunyai kekuatan dan kelangsingan yang berbeza. Kekuatan atau kenyaringan bunyi yang dihasilkan bergantung pada amplitud gelombang bunyi. Kelangsingan bunyi pula bergantung pada frekuensi gelombang bunyi yang dihasilkan. Frekuensi diukur dalam unit hertz (Hz).

KESAN DOPPLER
 - kesan doppler ialah perubahan frekuensi ketara yang disebabkan oleh pergerakan relatif sumber bunyi, pemerhati atau kedua-duanya.
